The Perks of Working at EA

So as many of you may have read about already, I was lucky enough to showcase NCAA 08 at our draft event up in New York City. We hosted a 6 hour premiere of hands-on gameplay at Tao Restaurant, an extremely posh place in Midtown Manhattan. There were a ton of people there, not just gaming press, and most everyone came away with a lot of positives about the game.

It’s crazy actually how nervous I was. I’ve done tons of events for the press while here at Tiburon, from in-house presentations to E3, but this one was definitely different. I truly was anxious to see how people reacted to the all new gameplay stuff that our team has poured so much effort into.

Being that it was very early, there were still a lot of bugs, so those frustrated me a bit. Outside of that, I think overall it went really well. Even for the annoyances (there were a ridiculous amount of fumbles and dropped passes in that build – both of which are already fixed), I got a ton of feedback that everyone seemed to have a lot of fun playing the build, which is what we really hoped to hear. I got plenty of good feedback to work off of too. It’s not often you get a chance like that to get basically a “play test” from hardcore and casual gamers with time to spare to actually fix things, so I’ve been working away to make sure we address all the things people were seeing and commenting on.

So not only did I get a free trip to NYC and dinner at one of the trendiest restaurants at the city (even though I was working), I also got to hang out with my sister (she lives up there) and one of my long-time friends from school (he was up there trying out for some TV show). But most of all, I got to go to the NFL Draft! We all sat up in the first mezzanine, and I could look right down into the ESPN crew broadcast. Seeing how they work throughout such a crazy long day was very interesting. I had to catch a flight out Saturday night, but I hung around long enough to finally see Brady Quinn get picked up...what was that, like 5 hours in?

At this point in my life I’ve turned into more of a fantasy football fan so I really follow players more than teams, but still I am a Giants fan…being there to see all those crazy fans was quite a trip too. I think Aaron Ross was a great pick in the 1st…I’m looking forward to putting him in and returning kicks this year in Madden. Maybe by year 3 in my Franchise I’ll have him breaking Hester’s records. I love Steve Smith too in the 2nd, I think he could turn into a dangerous receiver out there. Seems like a lot of teams really like the smaller receivers nowadays huh? Overall I think the Giants did pretty well, especially with a first time GM at the helm.  Well, that’s all for now, my build is done so I’m back to tuning.  Sound off on the comments – how did your team do in the draft?

yeah I can't figure out why you guys took fantasy draft out of the game. Bring it back it made season mode fun. Now I don't even touch it.

And before you guys think about pulling Live Opponent out of the game..Don't! It was one of the greater features in 07. Now all we need is like a online pick-up game. Before you start a game have an option to have a fantasy draft before the game and draft your players..

Sorry for so much posting but i'm a Giants fan too and it's about time you guys put their black cleats in the game. I'm excited about Ross,Smith,Alford,Zak,Boss,Johnson,Ahmad,Koets..I know em by heart already. Don't forget to put our corner Kevin Dockery in the game he wasn't on the roster on Madden 07 for some reason.

St. Louis Rams average draft grade = 2.7 (B-)

Carriker in round one was good choice, should shore up the porus run defense a bit (although Rams drafting D-line in the 2000's is a scary crapshoot that always comes up snake-eyes.)

Second round choice of Leonard from Rutgers was a wasted pick.  They should have grabbed either Abiamiri from ND as a pass rush compliment to Little or simply picked up more safety help for Chavous and Atogwe.

Wade in the 3rd was a good choice and beyond the first day you're really looking for depth and/or a miracle like Colston or Brady to fall into your lap.

All in all, had the Rams taken a better round 2 choice I would have thought they had a better draft.  As it is, I think most analysts have it right .... a "B-" grade.

(They should have made the trade with Carolina for Jenkins - figure if the Rams can't develop a D of their own they can just keep adding pieces of Carolina's - first Witehrspoon then Draft...maybe Jenkins still?)

Hey I just wanted to say all this sounds great for Madden! I am a long time Madden fan and have loved it since 93. However like everyone else I have been so dissapointed over the last 2 years. The new gameplay features sound almost too good to be true. I am very excited. I just wanted to know if you will be putting referees, chain gang and make the sidelines players and coaches more realistic? Its such a small thing but it would make it look so much better. Thanks and keep up the good work man.

Please correct the location of the LED ribbon board in Dolphin Stadium.  In Madden 07 and in the recent photos, it's too high.  I hope this is fixed for Madden 08.  (Hey, this is important stuff!)

My broncos did what I wanted them to do. Build the D-line to get a better pass rush, and they sure follow through with that.

Can't wait to be sacking QB's with Jarvis Moss! ;)

Broncos are going to be a deadly force this year with the addition of Dre Bly and the D-line upgrades. Goose luck to teams who get into 3rd and long. As for Madden, the game needs to be focused on the online functionality. This is the most realistic facit of the game. Only online do you get adjusting game plans and the need to adapt to win. Against the CPU, you just got to find the weakness and exploit them over and over again. I will recognize my weaknesses and adjust to them to shut you down if you try it again. The design focus should be for the online players of the game. I know not everyone has the online capability, but it is the future of true gaming.

I also think that Madden should have fantasy drafts in future versions, I don't even play franchise mode anymore, which I think is the best part of the game, it lets you actually draft anybody

You just have to have player editing, (real) create a player (not the half baked approach in 07) and most importantly  . . .FANTASY DRAFTING.  There are other options this year (ie. 2K8)and its time to finally step up and PUT BACK what was there in current gen.

Oh and Dan, you're wrong about the Rams second round pick.  You watch, Brian Leonard is a stud and will make Steven Jackson just that much more effective in fourth quarters of games(not to mention it should help to extend SJ's career).

I think Superstar Mode is ruined by having that foolish camera angle. I'd like to have that option, but I want to PLAY the game as well. Why can't I just feed my guy the rock when I want to? I can focus on him that way, perhaps integrate the first person view similar to what 2k had......haha

Oh where to begin.

Madden has always been great because it gave us, the fans and customers, the ablity to play our own game. Being able to customize players ability rankins, numbers, and changing postions is what made the madden franchise great.

Last year we couldnt do any of that, we where stuck with overated players across the board, and the inablity to change player positions and numbers made playing franchise down right painfull. It was a crap shoot signing free agents, it bothers me when i sign a franchise LT in free agency and it assigns him the number 0 or 17 or something ridiculous like that. It flat out bothers me that i'll trade or draft a RB and the game gives them the number 45, Im picky out player numbers and 45 doesnt look good on a RB.

Another thing is inabilty to change positions. I need to be able to change a LT to a RT or a RG to a LG or a C to a G or ROLB to LOLB or a SS to a FS or a CB to a FS or a DE to OLB or vice versa. Without the ability to change postions it makes it impossible to run a 3-4 defense in franchise years into the game. For instance I need to be able to draft a quick pass rushing DE and convert him to OLB or a DT to a DE to fit the scheme.

If EA doesnt give us, their customers and loyal fans, back this abilty that has made the game so great in the past I wont be buying '08. I didnt get my moneys worth out of '07 so why would I spend another $60 on a game thats not as good as Madden 2005? And its called Madden isnt it? where has Madden been these past two years? If hes not going to be included in the game stop calling it Madden. Seems like a mislabled product to me. Sorry for the rant but these things have been bothering me about this once great franchise.

PREEAACH!!

the man speaks the truth..if your the only company thats allowed to make football games, make good ones not half-assed games like the last 2 years. And how come we're able to switch a LB to a DE but not a DE to LB? Thats retarted.

Glad to hear the fumbles and dropped passes have been fixed, Ian.  Those reports really had some of the forums worried.

I think Steve Smith (Panthers) and Ricky Proehl (when he was on the Rams) can be credited with a lot of the shift from big receivers to small ones.

Madden 07 was an extremely poor addition to the mighty madden series. I have been following the series since the very start and last years Madden 2007 was especially a poor addition with little attention to detail and many missing great madden features we all have grown to love. I have read the Madden 08 preview at IGN and if EA keep all their promises maybe madden might dig its head out of the hole it sank into. Madden 08 shows plenty of promise and maybe the graphics could be tweaked a little more than the previous years. PC version of madden 07 of full graphical settings was a little poor. I know the game should be based on gameplay not graphics but madden also failed to deliver gameplay. Madden 08 lets prey for all those lost features, gameplay mega upgrades and more tweaked graphics! come on EA deliver something special this time...

Ever since the Colts vs. Patriots playoff game when the DBs for the Patriots man handled the Colts WRs down field, the league decided to actually enforce their no use of hands 5 yards beyond the line of scrimmage. Since then, the shorter faster and usually weaker WR has been able to thrive because you no longer need to use your body to physically create space down field.

Definietly bring back the fantasy draft, and the player editing.  Please make the owner/franchise mode more indepth like it was 3 years ago on PS2.  Another thing that needs to be brought back its the throw-back jerseys, and the 2nd and 3rd jerseys that teams have, ie. Falcons and Bengals.  I know you could buy them online but that *** sucks because some people dont play online and plus I wouldnt pay for throw-backs.  There are many other things but people have pretty much covered it all.  Im looking forward to this years game and i have been playing since 93, its like Christmas in August for me each year.  And by the way the 49ers are coming back.  The NFC West is ours.
